    1) to drive back, with dat. (síðan lét Egill hnekkja nautunum út á mýrar);
    hnekkja e-m frá, to repel, repulse;
    2) to check, thwart, prevent;
    hnekkja för sinni, to halt and go back again;
    hnekkja vándu ráði, to prevent an evil deed;
    3) to fall back, withdraw (hnekkja Írar nú frá).

    sneru þeir þá yfir ána, then they went across the river;

    snúa brott, to go away (maðrinn sneri þá brott);
    3) to change, alter (hann sneri síðan nafni sínu);
    snúa skapi sínu, to change one’s mind;
    4) to turn, twist, twine (snúa vönd í hárit);
    5) to translate (snúa Látinu-bréfinu í norrœnu);
    6) impers., snýr e-u, it is turned (snøri þá mannfalli í lið Kirjala); it changes (brátt sneri fjáærhaginum fyrir Teiti, er G. var í brottu);
